The Story behind the "How Jamie built his Endurance"

I started working with Jamie In 1997, at the Bradford Bulls Rugby League Club, as Head strength & conditioning coach. Jamie was a gifted young player, but his body let him down. He was tall & skinny as an 18 yo, & for him to play first grade he needed to dramatically increase his lean muscle mass, as well as maintaining his fitness levels, & ensuring the lean muscle mass was functional.

During the 1997 off season Matthew Elliott the head coach at that time, encouraged me to take Jamie, & a young Stuart Fielden out of main stream training & treat them as projects. The story about Project X & Y, has become a form of banter, but believe me the training that these two young players endured, was extreme,& no laughing matter.

Improving Fitness, & good sport specific functional abilities, whilst dramatically increasing muscle mass, is a challenge. With careful planning, & hard work, we  managed to be very successful at achieving this with Jamie.

The training programs, routines & drills I designed for Jamie & Stuart, enabled me to explore new methods of training the body. It was during this time that I developed my personal philosophy of Optimal Training Programming, rather than Maximal Training Programming. This philosophy of physical preparation has been the mainstay of my success over the past 15 years, & has helped hundreds of elite rugby league players reach their physical potential.

The focus of these routines was to work on multiple energy systems, and the  muscular contractions. This form of training developed a high level of sport specific physical ability.

After 18months on this program Jamie packed on an amazing 15kg of lean muscle mass. Jamie's size, durability, & endurance has assisted him to become dominant in one of the toughest physical contact sports in the world.
