Field Sport Speed Test (Standardized Routine Based Testing)

I believe success in running based field sport such as Rugby League, AFL, Soccer, Rugby Union, Hockey, rely on having good abilities in the various sub qualities of speed.

Over the past 6 years I have developed a field sport speed testing system, which assesses what I believe to be the essential speed abilities in field sports, it also acts as a standalone standardized training routine, enabling the coach and athlete to collect important testing data, as well as ensuring continual adaptation. Developing standardized routine based testing systems are essential in modern day professional sport, as coaches have to prioritize their preparation processes. Traditional testing methods, due to their maximal effort requirements, can often impede with the weekly preparation process, and contradict a recovery strategy emphasis. This is where the development of high quality standardized routines that also enable the coach and athlete to collect accurate testing data, and asses’ physical abilities, on a continual basis is the future of sports testing.

I believe my field sport speed testing system falls into this category; it has been used in field testing for the past 18months and has acted as an important aspect of the Penrith Panthers NRL team, sport speed development program. The    

How can we accurately measure sport speed performance.

Having a good understanding of the biomechanical movement patterns of field sport athletes, along with video analysis, and GPS data, as well as reading existing articles on sport speed enabled me to build up this sport specific standardized routine, testing protocol. It was obvious that if I could break down the various sub qualities of speed abilities of a field athlete, focus on improving these individual sub qualities, improving performance would be a natural outcome.
In field sports, implementing testing protocols with a maximal emphasis has very little credence on overall performance, as the field sport athletes requires spring repeatability, often under fatigue, so therefore an optimal approach must be implemented, utilizing sprint repeatability testing. It is crucial that the testing protocol is sport specific.

Individual differences

It is also important to recognise that within team sports there are a wide range of positional differences, as well as physical differences, forwards, backs, etc, but also that a constant in field sports is the ability to move quickly, multi directionally.
This testing system gives Z scores and radar plot graphs, to rank athletes within the team, as well as position ally, If athlete rank lower in specific speed sub qualities, specific training programs can be implemented to place an emphasis on these aspects, improving the athletes within the squad, and in turn improving individual and collective performance. 

The evaluation process

It is widely agreed that a cyclic approach is needed to improve performance through the utilization of testing protocols, I adhere to this principal.
I believe I have selected the correct characteristics to be measured.
I believe utilizing speed gates is a suitable method of measuring the specific speed sub qualities.
The collection of the sprint data is easily achievable.
Utilizing Z scores and radar plots enables easy analysis of testing data, essential for a coach and athlete.
The Z scores, and radar plots, enable athletes and coaches to make decisions on training manipulation.
The training manipulations ensure specificity on speed sub quality acquisition, improving performance.
