The Story behind the "Jennings Phosphate Shuttle"
In 2005 during my time at the Canberra Raiders RL team, I started working on developing a Standardized Running Based Program, which I believed could be used not only as a training aid, but also as a tool to monitor specific fitness. Over the following months I became committed in developing a routine which I believed in time could be recognized as an essential part of any serious athletes training system.
I experimented with a number of time & distance based running programs, but found it difficult to design one which addressed all the aspects of what I believe a true Standardization Routine should have. These being, Having an Exact Protocol, one which would be easy to follow, & easy to implement, as well as being extremely effective for fitness development.
During my time at the Canberra Raiders I was privileged to work with Alan Tongue who was recognized as one of the fittest men in Rugby League. I believed that if I could design a Running Routine which enhanced his fitness, than anyone could benefit from using it.
I asked Tonguey for his thoughts, & we discussed what aspects should be included in a running based program for Rugby. We came to the conclusion that an effective Running Routine should have a number of essential elements built into it. A shuttle format, ground work, progressive overload, a stop & start theme, to knock you out of your natural rhythm & include a performance scale, to allow athletes to monitor their fitness.
After a number of discussions I went away and put together a basic design, then hit the field running extensive trials with Tonguey. Utilizing different distances and running speeds, we monitored his heart rate and fatigue levels, eventually building a template that we believed had all the elements required. "The Jennings Phosphate Shuttle" was Born.
Since implementing this routine in 2005 it has become an important part of my Strength & Conditioning Program. At the Canberra Raiders it helped Tonguey to develop a level of fitness which enabled him to break the world record for tackles in a season.
Since joining the Penrith Panthers it is helping to build great fitness levels.
During my time working with the Great Britain team I was constantly asked by the players where they could purchase "The Jennings Phosphate Shuttle", so they could take it back to their clubs in the UK. It wasn't available then, But it is now, exclusively through this site.
